Mencap are the UK’s leading learning disability charity. They exist to improve the lives of the people with a learning disability and their families in the here and now, and campaign alongside them for a better future. You’ll find Mencap staff all over the UK, each and every one committed to its vision for a society where people with a learning disability are listened to, valued and included.
The services they provide can range from round-the-clock care to helping someone join in with local leisure activities, providing advice and information on things like employment and education, helping someone to live independently for the first time or report a crime to the police. In a nutshell, they try to help in any area of a person’s life where they need support. It’s not just about making things better day-to-day though, Mencap want to have an impact on the whole of society. That’s why they also devote time, resources and manpower to campaigning for change when they see things that are wrong. Mencap campaign for unfair laws to be changed, they campaign for equal healthcare and they campaign for an end to prejudice against people with a learning disability. They don’t intend to be quiet until everything that needs to change, has changed.
